Read Books

Dear Parents,

TODAY November 21, 2011 Page 15
Title: How about better parents?

Studies show those who read a book with their children do as much good as hours of tutoring.

"Yes, ....even when comparing students of similar socioeconomic backgrounds, those whose parents regularly read books to them when they were in the first year of primary school score 14 points higher, on average."

Better parents can make every teacher more effective.

Math foundation is important!

Dear Parents,

Can you remember Mr. Tsu's letter dated 4 Jan 2011?

"The '10,000 hour theory' posits that people who do well in Mathematics would have practised more than 10,000 hours over about 10 years of their lives as a student.

The number of hours for Math in the classroom is not enough. If your child can't do basic addition and subtraction, your child will definitely can't do the topic on Money. The accumulated topics that your child doesn't know will increase as days go by. I hope you will understand my concern.

Thursday, August 4, 2011

Dear Parents,

1) Next Thursday, there is a performance task. The topics are Numbers to 100 and Money.

Be a Responsible Student!

One of our RICE Values is Responsibility

I forget to do my homework, bring my worksheet/pencil case...
I lost my wallet, water bottle, money ...
My friend teaches me to ... and I choose to follow ... instead of saying NO.

Slide 1: How to teach children to be responsible?
Children need to learn to be responsible. They are to be responsible for their things, work and to say no to bad influences.

Slide 2: Be Dependable
Parents are role models for children to learn to take responsibility for their own actions.

Slide 3: Teach Kids Self-Care
Let children take responsibility for themselves in small ways, and then graduate to bigger ones. Remember to compliment them on how responsible they are. They’ll start to see themselves as capable and competent.

Slide 4: Give Kids a Role in the Family
Get them involved and let them know that their contribution helps the family.  Whatever they do, praise them for being responsible and let them know what they do is valued.

Slide 5: Help Them Get Organised
… Teach basic organisation skills. …to check their “to do” list…

Slide 6: Be Patient
Children need practice so they can build responsible habits, … and develop a sense of ownership …

Slide 7: Enlarge Their Scope
...take responsibility for others ... make a commitment to volunteer  for something,...stress our pride in seeing them follow through.

Slide 8: Cope with Irresponsible Behaviour
… brings natural consequences—doing a poor job on homework. Focus on how they can do better next time.

Better Handwriting

"...many kids can improve their handwriting if they work at it with the help of a grownup."1

I am sure all of us know the importance of legible handwriting. If we don't cultivate a habit to write legibly, I would believe this bad habit would stay with us.

There will be an ungraded test on handwriting in next week (week 6). And there is another test on handwriting in Term 2.

iRead

Dear Parents,

"Reading, whether for pleasure or information, improves one's mastery of a language by leaps and bounds."1

I would encourage you to read with your child. Every Friday, 1A goes to the school library from 8-8.30am. Your child brought a storybook home on Friday. This is to encourage your child to read storybooks. The storybook belongs to the school library.

Every morning, he/she has to read a storybook in the hall. Besides, your child is encouraged to read a storybook after he/she has completed his/her class work.
