Our Math Lesson - Subtraction

Topic: Ways To Subtract: Subtracting by regrouping into tens and ones
Introduction:
ipad application aids students to subtract within 20.
Amber: "We're not sure how ...,"
Green: "Let me show you."
Green: "We can do it too."

 Teacher explained the steps to subtract by regrouping into tens and ones.

Now it's time to let students do the same steps in groups.
Green: "We're confident!"
"We are better! Let's show our mental steps to our classmates." Excellent!
Teacher asked each group to look at their steps and explain their steps to get the answer.

Now it's time to have our individual work.

Your child will be having a Math Topical Review on week 9 (Wednesday, 29 February). This is ungraded. It is to check on your child's understanding.

1) Numbers to 10
2) Number  Bonds
3) Addition within 10
4) Subtraction within 10

If Math Workbook 1A Part 2 is at home, please let your child bring it to school by next week. The next chapter after 'Subtraction within 10' will be 'Numbers to 20'.

Meaning of Multiplication
  • A whole is made up of equal parts
  • Adding up the parts to find the whole
  • Repeated addition
  • Putting together equal groups
  • Groups with equal numbers of objects

Meaning of Division
  • Breaking up into equal groups
  • 2 types of division situations
    • Sharing - Find the number of objects in each group
    • Grouping - Find the number of groups

Math foundation is important!

Dear Parents,

Can you remember Mr. Tsu's letter dated 4 Jan 2011?

"The '10,000 hour theory' posits that people who do well in Mathematics would have practised more than 10,000 hours over about 10 years of their lives as a student.

The number of hours for Math in the classroom is not enough. If your child can't do basic addition and subtraction, your child will definitely can't do the topic on Money. The accumulated topics that your child doesn't know will increase as days go by. I hope you will understand my concern.

Maths Updates

Term 2 Topical Review
Congratulations! 9 of the students get 100%.
7 of them almost get 100%. They threw away 1 mark.
2 students have shown great improvement! (Increased by 32.5% and 42.5%) Well done! Keep it up!
Of course, many of them can do better.

The Journal Writing on Length is ungraded.

Ungraded Tests

There will be an ungraded Math Topical Review this Thursday. The topics are
1) Numbers to 10
2) Number bonds
3) Addition within 10
4) Subtraction within 10

I'll return the file and workbook to all the students tomorrow. They are to do corrections at home if they can't complete them in class tomorrow.

Next monday, there will be an ungraded speaking test. Students will be recording their voice in the computer lab.
